DIY – How to install simple and cheap glass shelves

The video below demonstrates how I installed simple and inexpensive glass shelves at home in a few steps.

Step 1 – Design your glass shelf

Glass shelving looks great in most rooms; even the most basic pieces look effortlessly modern. If you have a tight budget, a single tempered glass shelf is a great place to start.

Step 2: Measuring and cutting the glass

You need to cut your glass first, of course. You can always get pre-cut glass shelving in the size you need, as I did. I used 6-In. by 24-In. glass shelves, because I don’t feel confident enough to cut glass myself.

The brackets and standoffs come next. They must be kept to a minimum because they are an important component of the design and overall appearance of the shelf and do not want to appear heavy or excessive.

Step 3: Fixing the glass shelf

Installing the glass shelf with the appropriate brackets for your type of wall, attaching the glass shelf to the wall is rather straightforward. For instance, dry lined walls require a certain kind of plug that opens into the space behind the plaster board. The screws can then be installed because they are securely fastened to the wall.

You must drill holes in the wall and use a proper wall plug for other materials, such as brick or breeze block.

Without weakening the bond between the glass and wall, the brackets for the glass shelf themselves can be rather simple (like the ones I used in my video). In fact, there is a vast selection of fittings that may be used with glass as a material.

The purpose of the fixings is to make sure that the glass shelf is properly attached and no longer teeters on top of the wall brackets. Clamping allows for the quick and simple attachment of these components.

Although glass is a very robust material, if too much pressure is applied to one area at once, the glass will get overloaded and crack and break. Nonetheless, the secure fastening that these clamps offer spreads the load without overtightening.

Once the fasteners are securely in place, you’ll have a stunning glass shelf fit!
